Back of the House vs. Front of the House
Depending on what part of the restaurant you want to work in, you will find yourself either in the back or the front of the house. Typically, the people in the back of the house are your kitchen staff and any other people not usually seen by the customers. - Pastry Chef Jobs - Pastry chefs usually prepare most of the desserts and breads themselves with the help of an assistant cook earlier in the evening and rely on one of the cooks to assemble the desserts later in the evening for the customers. These are great jobs for people with baking skills and a sweet tooth.
- Kitchen Manager Jobs - Sometimes the kitchen manager is also the chef. In very large or specialty restaurants, these need to be two separate positions so that the chef is not bogged down with management duties and the kitchen manager doesn't have to worry about performing the chef's duties.
- Dishwashers - These jobs can be good entry-level opportunities for people passionate about the restaurant business. The work can be physically demanding, but you'll get a good idea of how the kitchen is run.
- Front of the House Employment - here are a few front of the house restaurant jobs:
- General Manager - Good general managers have great organizational and people skills. From the moment the doors open until they close, the manager makes sure that everything runs smoothly.
- Host Jobs - With this type of job, you'll be greeting people as they come in the door and seating them in the dining room. This is typically the entry level position for the front of the house and a good host can go on to be a waitperson or bartender.
- Bartender Jobs - You'll be behind the bar mixing drinks and pouring wine. You may have to enforce liquor laws, so this job does require a level of diplomacy.
- Waiters - This type of employment involves taking meal orders, recommending wine, and ensuring that the customers are satisfied with their experience.
- Bus Person - If you are interested in employment as a waiter or bartender, but don't have any experience, you'll want to apply for a job as a bus person.
